Property Description

Craig Creek Cottage is a great location for adventure enthusiasts and serenity lovers, alike.  It's located on a rhododendron-lined mountain stream in the Wilson Creek Section of the Pisgah National Forest (Grandfather Ranger District).  A five minute walk takes you to Craig Creek's confluence with Wilson Creek.  Wilson Creek is a National Wild and Scenic River, and is spectacular all year round!

There is plenty to do here.  There are mountain biking trails, hiking trails, waterfalls to view, Class III-V whitewater kayaking, and the Brown Mountain Off Highway Vehicle Area.  You can fish for either wild or stocked trout and hunt according to the season.  The wildlife viewing is fabulous with wild turkey and many other species of birds to see.  Dragonfly and butterfly enthusiasts will find many varieties to chase.  Of course, there are white-tail deer in the area, and if you're lucky you may even spot a fox, a black bear or the occasional coyote!

In the summer it's a great place to swim, canoe and do some lazy tubing.  The spring wildflowers and the autumn leaves are gorgeous, and in the winter (if you don't mind about an hour's drive) you can add a day at the slopes to your outdoor activities since it's only about 35 miles to Sugar Mountain or Appalachian Ski Mountain resorts.  On days you prefer to relax, just rock on the front porch while you chat, play games or read by the woodstove, or roast marshmallows over the portable fire pit outside.

Depending upon your length of stay, you may want to check out other attractions within driving distance of Craig Creek Cottage. On the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway you'll find the Brown Mountain Overlook, where you can try to glimpse the mysterious Brown Mountain Lights.  You'll find other premiere natural destinations such as Linville Falls and Linville Caverns nearby, too.

If you just can't stay away from civilization, North Carolina cities such as Lenoir, Morganton, Hickory, Blowing Rock, and Boone are a half hour to an hour's driving distance, where you'll be able to find just about anything you want.  For groceries and supplies, Lenoir is closest, and there are theaters and/or restaurants no matter which of these destinations you choose.  There are wonderful boutiques in Blowing Rock, as well as an outlet mall-- Tanger Shoppes on the Parkway.

Looking for additional entertainment for the kids?  For a change of pace try the lovely children's playground called Martha's Park-- complete with outdoor play fountain--in Morganton. If that isn't exciting enough, how about Tweetsie Railroad?  At nearby Grandfather Mountain you'll find the the Mile High Swinging Bridge and the summer Highland Games, as well as black bears, river otters, cougars, eagles, and white tail deer in the park's Wildlife Habitats.

This cozy family getaway has knotty pine paneling and hardwood floors.  With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, Craig Creek Cottage allows plenty of room for parties of 2-6 to spread out.  With the queen size futon in the living room and the twin sleeper in the sunroom, this cabin can technically sleep as many as 10 (though that might feel a bit tight!)

Craig Creek Cottage has 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, Sleeps 7 comfortably (10 max)

Listen to the gurgle of Craig Creek from the porch or sit in our porch swing by the creek bank.  'Secret' stone steps take you down to the stream for wading, fishing and playing.  It is a mere 5 minute walk to the confluence with Wilson Creek (designated a National Wild and Scenic River).  On the other hand, it is only a 15-mile drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the forest road that takes you there is, itself, gorgeous!  As a result, Craig Creek Cottage is ideally situated to enjoy all that this area of the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer.

In the winter you can spend time on the slopes 35 miles away.  About an hour's drive, it is easy for to throw your gear in the car and head up for the day.

It is also fun to explore nearby civilization.  In one direction are Lenoir, Hickory, and Morganton, while in the other direction you'll find Grandfather Mountain, and beautiful Blowing Rock (complete with the Tweetsie Railroad).  I discovered a restaurant we love in Boone--Wild Craft Eatery.  Explore farther afield on the Parkway, too, and enjoy visiting Altapass Orchard, Mt. Mitchell, Spruce Pine and Little Switzerland!  We head out for the day, have a wonderful time, and then return home to our cozy cottage!
