Located in the stunning setting of Southwest Florida, and with a population of under 180,000, Cape Coral is renowned for being the second safest city in Florida. And with an abundance of natural resources, the area has seen an upsurge in tourism over the last forty years, but still managed to retain its small town charm.

Situated amongst a vast network of fresh and saltwater canals, the Cape offers exceptional boating, water sports and fishing opportunities. Outdoor recreation is in abundance and no matter what your interests, you are sure to find something that exceeds your expectations.

The Venice of Florida

With more than 400 miles of canals and navigable waterways, Cape Coral has more miles of waterway than any other city in the world and most of these have access to the Gulf of Mexico. So, It's easy to see why Cape Coral has been labelled the 'Venice of Florida'. Today, Florida lifestyle, as evident by the addition of modern waterfront condo-marina complexes and luxury condo-hotel resorts.

The Beaches

If your idea of a heavenly beach is a long stretch of white sand fringed with palm trees and azure blue water, then Southwest Florida is for you. Whether you're looking at small family beaches, or out-of-the-way island retreats, or even party time beaches, either on the Gulf of Mexico or the Caloosahatchee River, then a Cape Coral vacation rental home will give you access to all of that and more.

Apart from the Cape's own two beaches, one of the world's top ten beaches is just 20 miles from Cape Coral at Sanibel Island. Sanibel is the perfect place to take the kids shelling. Plus it's teaming with wildlife with Bottlenose dolphins often seen in the clear Gulf waters. Southwest Florida is home to some of the most friendly and daring porpoises you'll ever see. And, if you've also never seen manatees, then check out the inlets and rives in the area as they're a relatively common sight.

The Wildlife

Are you interested in bird watching while in town? If you are, then you might want to check out the local Eco Park which also offers canoe and kayak rentals which allow you to explore the mangroves. The Cape is home to a number of native species of bird, including Great Egrets, American White Pelicans, Roseate Spoonbills, American Peregrine Falcons and the Anhinga. All of these species can be seen in and around the Cape.

The History

Southwest Florida is rich in both history and culture. The area is believed to have first been inhabited by Calusa Indians in approximately 1150 B.C. Wind the clock forward two and a half thousand years and the southwest coast of Florida was the first landing place of the invading Spanish conquistadors. Soon after, the area became a haven for pirates who sailed the clear warm waters of the Gulf.

In more recent times, the potential for tourism was recognized and in the later 1950s, the Gulf American Corporation was formed to develop the area on the north side of the Caloosahatchee River. This one hundred and three square mile area was then known as Redfish Point, but as part of the initial development, it was renamed to Cape Coral. It was soon developed into the popular vacation and relocation destination that we see today. In the twenty first century, further developments have included the addition of modern waterfront condo-marina complexes and luxury condo-hotel resorts. Today, the Cape has come to reflect the very best of the Floridan lifestyle.

The Climate

Average annual temperatures in Cape Coral range from lows of 75 oF (24 oC) in winter months to 92 oF (33 oC) during the summer months. While the summers in the region are very warm, humid and rainy, the winters in Cape Coral are dry with comparatively moderate temperatures.

During the summer months of June, July and August, afternoon rains can be heavy but brief. And as with everywhere in Florida, the city is affected by the annual hurricane season, which officially begins on June 1 and continues on through until November.

Some vacation rental homes come with boats, or if you prefer your own, then bring it along with you. It's worth remembering that many of the canals have access to the Gulf of Mexico
