An Upscale Break from the Disney Theme Parks
Grab your sunscreen and prepare to be entertained for an hour on the Scenic Boat Tour where guests board a small pontoon and gently cruise around Lake Osceola, two other lakes and two 19th century canals. Floating past countless Gatsby-esque lakeside mansions, the captain will keep up a rolling commentary of fascinating facts and gossip about residents both old and new. One manor apparently began as a private men's club, while another was featured in scenes from 1954's classic horror flick "The Creature From the Black Lagoon."
The Morse Museum of Modern Art is well worth a visit. It proudly houses the world's most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), including jewelry, paintings and glass. I particularly loved the Daffodil Reading Lamp – the artist loved daffodils.
Also notable is Casa Feliz Historic Home . It is a beautifully restored Spanish farmhouse. It is open to the public each Sunday between 12 and 3 pm and Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon. The purpose of the open houses is to share the Casa Feliz story: the architecture and legacy of James Gamble Rogers II, the house's historic contributions to the community and its architectural landscape. Sunday provides ‘Music at the Casa' when a different musical group performs in the main parlor.
Winter Park is entirely walkable and with the Amtrak going directly there and stopping right in the center, there is no excuse. On glamorous Park Avenue, there's no shortage of dress, accessory, kitchen and flower shops to while away a lazy afternoon. And if you feel the need to build up your strength, stop off for a cocktail at one of the many bars and restaurants that adorn the street, many with tables outside. This is real foodie paradise.
After having your fix of culture and enjoying some posh nosh, head back to Orlando for a swim in your own private pool. Selection of homes on Tripelli.
